Yorkville Community Introduction

Community Overview

The Yorkville community is located in the heart of Toronto, roughly bounded by Bloor Street to the south, Davenport Road to the north, Yonge Street to the east, and Avenue Road to the west. As one of Toronto’s most vibrant neighborhoods, Yorkville boasts luxury condos, commercial office buildings, five-star hotels, cinemas, and gourmet restaurants. Additionally, Toronto’s famous high-end shopping street is also located here.

The commercial core of Yorkville is situated on Yorkville Ave and Cumberland Street. The transition from the bustling commercial area to the quiet residential area is seamless, showcasing the unique architectural style of the Yorkville community.

Community History

The Yorkville community was established in 1830 by brewer Joseph Bloor and Sheriff William Botsford Jarvis. It was named after Yorktown, the predecessor of the city of Toronto, and became a village in 1853. In 1883, Yorkville was officially incorporated into the city of Toronto. Despite becoming part of a larger city, it has maintained its unique character and became a well-known shopping destination during the 1980s and 1990s.

Community Housing

The houses in Yorkville are predominantly Victorian-style homes built between 1870 and 1895. These historically significant homes feature decorative elements such as glazed brick patterns, ornate gables, cast iron fences, and lush gardens. Many of Yorkville’s houses are listed on the Toronto Historical Board’s heritage list. Yorkville is one of Toronto’s most “international” communities, attracting local buyers and international investors alike. It enjoys a prime location, offering a tranquil community life while providing easy access to the bustling city center. Yorkville is recognized as one of the hottest high-end real estate markets in the world, drawing numerous business elites. The most expensive transaction was the Penthouse at the Four Seasons, sold for $26.8 million.

Community Life

Bloor-Yorkville is recognized as Canada’s most upscale shopping district. The area is home to numerous boutiques, fashion shops, jewelry stores, antique shops, and art galleries, making it a must-visit destination for local and foreign tourists. The shops and restaurants in the community are primarily located in Victorian-style buildings on Yorkville Avenue, Hazelton Avenue, Cumberland Street, and Scollard Street. The Hazelton Lanes Shopping Centre at 55 Avenue Road features over 100 specialty stores and restaurants.

Community Transportation

Yorkville boasts excellent transportation options. It is within walking distance of the Bloor/Yonge subway station on the Yonge-University-Spadina line and the Bay subway station on the Bloor-Danforth line. The DVP highway is just a five-minute drive from the area.

Community Schools

The Yorkville area is surrounded by renowned public and private schools, including the University of Toronto, UTS, ST Joseph College, the Ontario College of Art and Design, as well as top private schools like Upper Canada College and Havergal College.
